Again, this is a book that arouses women's interest only, men might find it bored except when they read some erotic and SM scenes. However, these parts are at the last few chapters, can men carry on reading for so long and reach there?
Eleven minutes is considered almost the most important time of the day when men can take off their fences. With several orgasms, they can even see God. Although when you reach there, you want it lasts forever, but in a finding of some research, the average time for human to stay in "heaven" is only eleven minutes.
Here come to talk a little bit about the storyline:
A Brazilian girl, Maria, was persuaded to go to Switzerland to be a samba dancer when she was having a trip alone.
She would like to take adventures instead of waiting to get old and die in her motherland, so she decided to go.
Before she left Brazil, she consulted her mother. In her mother's opinion, becoming a samba dancer in a foreign country means greater chance to be famous, to earn more money and to get married with a wealthy man. Here is her advice:
"My dear, it's better to be unhappy with a rich man than happy with a poor man, and over their you'll have far more chance of becoming an unhappy rich woman. Besides, if it doesn't work out, you can just get on the bus and come home."
A very "Kong girl's" comment, isn't it?
When Maria got to Switzerland, life was not so easy as she thought. She ended up becoming a prostitute.
She did not look down on herself nor indulged in drugs. Instead, she planned her days, spent her money sensibly, studied French, borrowed books from library to acquire more knowledge when she was free. After a year, she earned a fortune and was able to realize her dream: buy a farm in her homeland and take care of her parents.
And at that time, she met a wealthy, young and handsome painter who saw her light. They fell in love in the first sight.
I am quite disappointed at the ending of the story. It seems all the searching, philosophic thinking, detailed planing are all useless when it comes to such ordinary happy ending.

Maybe it says,to the end, a girl should prepare well to see her happiness.
Paulo Coelho has written a much better book "The Alchemist". It is a fairy tale about the process of searching for one's dream.
It gives me some inspirations when I was very small. Today, I still find some parts of the book interesting.
Coffe n Tea:
Yup, the girl is well prepared to see her happiness. However, her happiness is not necessarily together with the painter. She can get back to Brazil, buy her farm, start business and become successful.
The love between she and the painter was built on freedom and imagination, so why go back to the routine and face reality?
Matt:
Thanks for your suggestion, I'll see whether I can buy it.
Read this book some time ago but almost forgot all the interesting lines. just saved it from the deep dark bookshelves corner. some intriguing lines to share:
"life had taught her that the men who took least care of their appearance - as with this painter - always seemed to have more money than the men in suits and ties." (p. 107) don't you agree? stay away from illusion at least.
"the great aim of every human being is to understand the meaning of total love. Love is not to be found in someone else, but in ourselves; we simply awaken it. But in order to do that, we need the other person. The universe only makes sense when we have someone to share our feelings with." (p. 126) Is that beautiful?
and many more...
thanks for sharing and reminding me of this long forgotten fiction.
Yup, the sentences you quoted are beautiful.
The writer persuade us to believe that both men and women search and need love. However, what I think is that men would not think about love all the time but women do.
The painter, who can be so passionately in love because he is
1. rich ; 2. has a lot of free time; 3. don't care about others' opinions on prostitutes.
For most of the men, I didn't think that they have those 3 criteria.
strongly agree, in particular point 2
Already buy another book "The Alchemist" and will deliver to my factory later on, let's see what's that book about.
